Kinmers  Lea

Kinmers Lea is an exciting adventure set in the year 1086. William the Conqueror is on the throne of England.  Twenty years after the Normans won the Battle of Hastings and took over the country by force, William has decided to raise money by taxing everyone.  To do this he is carrying out a huge survey of the country which goes into every aspect of daily life.  It must all be written down and then he will decide what people must pay him.  The Saxons, who were the losers at the Battle in 1066, are seething with resentment.  They call William’s survey the Doomsday Book.

12-year-old Edwin is a quiet lad who keeps his head down and doesn’t interact much with adults. That changes when he overhears a gang of men plotting a kidnapping.  Edwin is horrified.  He’s determined to go after them and try to stop them.  Edwin has some big advantages over the kidnappers that he’s keeping very quiet about.   He also has a very unusual companion in his quest.  His Gran is going with him.

Truth or fiction?
The Doomsday Book is a real piece of history.  It is kept in Britain’s National Archives.
Kinmers Lea is a real place.  People have lived and worked there for more than a thousand years.  In the Doomsday Book it appears as  'Chinemarelie' (the 'K' sound written 'Ch').  Today it is known as Kimberley.  All the other locations in the adventure exist today and existed in 1086, too.
The people are a different matter.  They are straight from the writer’s imagination, and she has played about with the spelling of some of the place names.  So the plot is a mixture of the real world and a lot of make believe.

3 Adventures with Shan the Labrador puppy

A beautiful volume, illustrated in full colour, which would make a lovely present for a special occasion.

Shan is adorable!  He is a cuddly, chocolate-brown Labrador puppy. He tries his best - he really does - but somehow things never go quite according to plan.  His best friend, Kit, can do anything.  Shan wishes he was more like him.  Kit's cool.  He's different.  There's something about Kit that makes him different from any other dog.

Shan and Kit get themselves into all kinds of situations and come up against some evil villains.  But Shan and Kit tackle them all and, despite Shan’s blundering, they never fail to win the day.

If you think of the puppy who advertises toilet tissue on TV, but dark brown, you can imagine Shan.  He’s a character you’re going to love.

The three stories in the book are:

Shan and the Tree

Shan and the Pond

Shan and the Snow
Plus a bonus short story - Shan and the School
